Boxing Rocked With Edwin Valero, Wife Murder-suicide

On Sunday, April 18, former WBA Super Featherweight Champion and WBC Lightweight Champion Edwin Valero was arrested for the alleged murder of his wife, Jennifer Viera in Caracas, Venezuela. He later committed suicide in his holding cell, allegedly hanging himself with his own clothes. He was only 28. The southpaw was a legend in the making and had yet to be defeated. All of his 27 wins were via knockout, and 19 in the first round.

It is alleged that Edwin Valero left his hotel room near dawn on Sunday, and told hotel security he had murdered his wife. Police entered the room and discovered the body of Jennifer Viera, aged 24, stabbed to death. After being arrested, Valero hung himself with his own sweat pants according to the Huffington Post. The last few years have seen three high profile boxers meet a violent end. Former champion Alexis Arguello was found dead from a gunshot, and Arturo Gatti was dead from asphyxiation. Gatti was considered a suicide, and Arguello’s demise has yet to be given an official pronouncement.

A troubled career with promise

Edwin Valero had no peer. Fighters with his knockout power are few, and southpaws like him are fewer. He went undefeated for 27 fights, all knockouts, 19 of which in the first round, breaking a record that stood since 1905. He won his first 18 fights as a professional in that manner, becoming a popular sensation in professional boxing.

His career was troubled by injury

A motorcycle injury he sustained while not wearing a helmet nearly derailed his professional career before it started. Since he suffered brain trauma, it meant he wouldn’t be licensed by many state bodies in the US, and didn’t fight there between 2003 and 2009.
